Course Overview

Kernel architectures, processes, threads, CPU scheduling, synchronization (mutex/semaphores), deadlocks, paging, and POSIX. Curriculum Structure & Core Modules: • 1. Operating System Structure: Monolithic Kernels, Microkernels, System Calls, and Context Switching • 2. Process...

What You'll Learn

  • Explain operating system dual-mode execution (user vs kernel), system calls, and trap architectures.
  • Evaluate preemptive and non-preemptive CPU scheduling algorithms (Round Robin, Multilevel Feedback Queues).
  • Resolve race conditions and concurrent synchronization bugs using mutexes, semaphores, and condition variables.
  • Analyze deadlock conditions (Coffman) and apply Banker's algorithm for avoidance and detection.
  • Develop robust systems software in C utilizing POSIX system calls (fork, exec, wait, pipes, shared memory).

Requirements

  • Completion of CPE 212 and CPE 214.
